Description: Spathiphyllum 'Domino', commonly known as the Variegated Peace Lily, is a striking indoor plant known for its unique variegated foliage. The leaves are dark green with white streaks and speckles, creating a dramatic contrast that adds visual interest to any space. Like other Peace Lilies, 'Domino' is easy to care for and known for its air-purifying qualities.

Flowers: The flowers of Spathiphyllum 'Domino' are classic Peace Lily spathes – pure white, sail-shaped blooms that emerge on tall stalks above the foliage. The spathes surround a central spadix, creating a striking and elegant display. These flowers can last for several weeks and often bloom multiple times throughout the year.

Foliage: The foliage of 'Domino' is its most distinctive feature. The broad, lance-shaped leaves are dark green with bold white variegation in the form of streaks and spots. This variegation makes 'Domino' a standout among other Peace Lilies.

Form and Size: Spathiphyllum 'Domino' has a compact, clumping growth habit, typically reaching up to 50-60 cm (20-24 inches) in height and spread. Its manageable size makes it perfect for indoor spaces, including living rooms, offices, and bedrooms.

Growing Conditions:

  • Light: Prefers low to moderate indirect light. It can tolerate low light conditions, making it ideal for indoor environments. Avoid direct sunlight as it can scorch the leaves.
  • Soil: Well-draining, peat-based potting mix.
  • Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Peace Lilies also appreciate regular misting to maintain humidity.
  • Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 18-27°C (65-80°F). Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C (60°F).
  • Humidity: Prefers high humidity levels. Regular misting or placement near a humidity tray can help maintain the necessary moisture in the air.

Uses: Spathiphyllum 'Domino' is primarily used as an ornamental houseplant. Its elegant variegated foliage and white flowers make it an excellent choice for adding a touch of sophistication to indoor spaces. It is also known for its air-purifying abilities, helping to remove toxins like benzene, formaldehyde, and ammonia from the air.

Maintenance: This plant is relatively low-maintenance. Regularly wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and maintain their shine. Remove any spent flowers and yellowing leaves to keep the plant looking its best. Repot every 2-3 years to refresh the soil and provide more space for growth.

Notes: Spathiphyllum 'Domino' is toxic if ingested, so it should be kept out of reach of pets and children. Handle the plant with care, as the sap can cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals.

Companion Plants: Spathiphyllum 'Domino' pairs well with other low-light tropical plants that have similar care requirements, such as:

  • ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)
  • Snake Plant (Sansevieria trifasciata)
  • Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)
  • Philodendron species

Good Reading
Format: Paperback
The third book we chose to read for our summer reading program was Not That Pet! I am a nanny of a six-year-old girl going into first grade. It’s fun seeing a child’s eyes light up when a book or story engages their imagination. This story was another hit. This was an entertaining read! This is a rhyming read-aloud story that had us both giggling from the beginning of the story to the end. The main character, Mabel, is allowed to pick the family pet. She is determined to find the perfect pet. Her choices had us groaning, ‘oh nooo’ while shaking our heads and laughing out loud. We couldn’t read fast enough to see Mabel’s next choice. Her final decision was unpredictable. We couldn’t believe the final choice was a…. well, you’ll just have to read the story yourself to find out. The illustrations themselves had us smirking. We took the time to really look at the pages and discovered small details that really added to the enjoyment of the story. We read this story several times which is an indicator that this book is a keeper. Enjoy reading Summer 2023! originally posted at long and short reviews
